Bronze Sculpture

Large, human-themed bronze sculptures are  the central works of Björn Weckström's sculpting career. Their creation was influenced by a similar revelation that had led him to find his own artistic expression as a jewelry designer in the 1960s.

Even before the 1980s, Weckström had created smaller, abstract bronze sculptures. However, it was only after seeing the so-called Riace bronzes, sculptures discovered on the seabed off the coast of Riace in Italy and dating back 2500 years, that he realized the expressive possibilities that naturalism could offer in addressing the themes he wanted to explore through sculpture. An impressive exhibition in Florence featuring two bronze figures from Riace marked the beginning of a quarter-century phase in Weckström's career, during which he completed over 20 large bronze sculptures for his personal collection and additional public works.

For sculptures Weckström has had a studio in Italy in the town of Pietrasanta (LU),  and Fonderia Artistica Mariani has over 40 years been casting his works.

Using the tools of narrative realism, Weckström has addressed in his sculptures the relationship between man and machine, genetic modification, disinformation, consumerism, themes of war and peace, and many other existential questions facing mankind. The bronze sculptures have toured numerous exhibitions across various parts of Europe.
